About Us

The Montessori Play and Learn Centre Ltd. (Argyll Montessori School Ltd.)

Montessori Play and Learn Centre Ltd in Edmonton, Alberta opened its doors in September 1982 in a single classroom in Argyll Elementary School under the direction of our founder Mrs Naaz Sabur. Mrs Sabur, then a new graduate from the Maria Montessori Training Organization in London, England, brought with her a passion for the Montessori Method of teaching.

Mrs Sabur continued to operate the Centre for over 30 years and retired in September 2019 when former parent, Ms Juliana Lambert, took over leadership of the Centre. While the location and size of the school have changed over the years the philosophy and passion of the dedicated team have remained intact.

The Centre moved into its wonderful new space in January 2020. The Centre operates out of two large classrooms and three enhancement rooms. The Centre also utilizes a fenced backyard space, upper auditorium for indoor physical activity and the sanctuary for annual performances. The central location allows for utilization of many community resources including local playgrounds, parks, splash pads and swimming pool.

The Centre is licensed by the Ministry of Children’s Services and received re-accreditation by the Alberta Association for the Accreditation of Early Learning and Care Services prior to the cancellation of the Accreditation program.

What is Accreditation?

In order for an early childcare program to be accredited by the AELCS, the center must voluntarily undergo a comprehensive process of internal self-study and invite external professionals to review and verify compliance with the AELCS’s criteria for high-quality early childcare programs.

What is a High-Quality Early Education Program?

  • A healthy and safe environment for the children

  • Effective administration and ongoing, systematic evaluation

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide an environment in which each child’s unique needs – emotional, physical, social, cultural and intellectual – are met so that each child can develop in the most effective way.

We believe that all children can learn successfully and that all children can and do want to learn. Each child comes from a unique background which affects his/her capabilities for learning, as well as his/her intellectual, physical, emotional, social and cultural needs. Children thrive in an environment where all their needs are met. Each child needs to have love, acceptance, recognition, respect, encouragement, and understanding.

Our program strives to deliver each of these ingredients needed for productive and enjoyable learning.

Our Goals

At The Montessori Play and Learn Centre Ltd., our priority is placed on early literacy, following the principles of Montessori education. Over and above meeting all the developmental needs of the children, our staff works closely with our students to build their academic skills. This is achieved by accounting for the individual needs and learning patterns of each child, and by maintaining a close relationship with the parents, who are the primary caregivers of our students.

Our Centre is Committed To:

  • Providing a safe haven for each child, where he/she will feel secure in a loving, caring environment
  • Encouraging social interaction at all levels between all age groups
  • Providing a balance between mental and physical activity
  • Encouraging respect for others’ privacy and property
  • Establishing acceptable forms of behavior in each child
  • Being non-discriminatory on the basis of race, religion, cultural heritage, political beliefs, marital status, national origin, or sexual orientation
  • Communicating regularly and openly with the parents
