About Us

The Montessori Play and Learn Centre (Argyll Montessori School Ltd.)

The Montessori Play and Learn Centre (Argyll Montessori School Ltd.) in Edmonton, AB opened its doors in September 1982 in a single classroom in Argyll Elementary School, under the direction of Mrs. Naaz Sabur. Mrs. Sabur, then a new graduate from the Maria Montessori Training Organization in London, England, brought with her passion for the Montessori Method of teaching.

After over thirty years in the education industry, Mrs. Sabur continues to operate and teach at the Centre. Although the location and size of the school have changed over the years, the philosophy and the passion felt by Mrs. Sabur and her dedicated staff members remain intact.

The Centre has been located at its present space, in the historical Queen Alexandra Elementary School in the Old Strathcona neighborhood, since 1984. The Centre operates out of two classrooms on the main floor of the school and utilizes all the amenities of the school, including the library, gymnasium, and playground.

The Centre is licensed by the Ministry of Children’s Services under the Social Care Facilities Licensing Act. The Centre is also accredited by the Alberta Association for the Accreditation of Early Learning and Care Services (AELCS).

What is Accreditation?

In order for an early childcare program to be accredited by the AELCS, the center must voluntarily undergo a comprehensive process of internal self-study and invite external professionals to review and verify compliance with the AELCS’s criteria for high-quality early childcare programs.

Mission Statement

 width=

Our mission is to provide an environment in which each child’s unique needs – emotional, physical, social, cultural and intellectual – are met so that each child can develop in the most effective way.

We believe that all children can learn successfully and that all children can and do want to learn. Each child comes from a unique background which affects his/her capabilities for learning, as well as his/her intellectual, physical, emotional, social and cultural needs. Children thrive in an environment where all their needs are met. Each child needs to have love, acceptance, recognition, respect, encouragement, and understanding.

Our program strives to deliver each of these ingredients needed for productive and enjoyable learning.

Our Goals

At The Montessori Play and Learn Centre, our priority is placed on early literacy, following the principles of Montessori education. Over and above meeting all the developmental needs of the children, our staff works closely with our students to build their academic skills. This is achieved by accounting for the individual needs and learning patterns of each child, and by maintaining a close relationship with the parents, who are the primary caregivers of our students.

Our Centre is Committed To:

  • Providing a safe haven for each child, where he/she will feel secure in a loving, caring environment
  • Encouraging social interaction at all levels between all age groups
  • Providing a balance between mental and physical activity
  • Encouraging respect for others’ privacy and property
  • Establishing acceptable forms of behavior in each child
  • Being non-discriminatory on the basis of race, religion, cultural heritage, political beliefs, marital status, national origin, or sexual orientation
  • Communicating regularly and openly with the parents
